Sustainability

Welcome to TreeCasa Resort’s Journey to Sustainability

TreeCasa Hotel & Resort Nicaragua is proud to be a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative led by the United Nations Environment Programme and the World Tourism Organization, in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Sustainable Architecture

All structures on the property are built in the palapa thatch architectural tradition, which dates back to the ancient civilizations of the Aztec, Inca and Maya. We use sustainable eco-friendly materials to reduce impact: native teak and bamboo poles, thatch roof woven from palm leaves—designed to shed water, create natural insulation and enhance airflow.

Ecological Design

TreeCasa was designed to resound nature’s elegant and profound architecture and built to honor the expansive 450-acre canvas of dynamic landscape, plants and animals in which it exists. We build into the land and not on top of it. Ceiba trees form the heart of TreeCasa; the hills and coastal jungle form its frame. Winding walkways follow natural terrain to let guests appreciate the diverse landscape at different levels and perspectives.

Healthy Habitats

We created a naturalist pond for sustainable water management and to provide a habitat for native turtles, fish and iguanas.

We consciously preserve natural habitats in trees and on ground for diverse species of monkeys, butterflies, birds, amphibians and more while restoring native forest along 20km of trails.

Agro-ecology

We embrace agro-ecology, weaving organic practices into our landscaping. Our dedicated organic garden is a hub of biodiversity, where we cultivate cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, radishes, and a variety of herbs. This space not only provides fresh ingredients but also supports our commitment to sustainability and local ecosystems.
Through these efforts, we strive to offer guests an authentic connection to nature, showcasing the beauty and benefits of organic agriculture.

Sustainable Energy

Reduce, Reuse And Recylcling

Our water catchment systems capture grey water to grow bananas and other water-loving plants. We collect all our organic garden, grounds and kitchen scraps to replenish the soil with the richest compost for growing. Our garbage and recycling program extends from TreeCasa to the wider community in environmental educational programs (we also make art from recycled materials).

Water & Earth-friendly

We use special ozone filters and purifiers to keep our pools clean and contaminant-free, minimizing the use of traditional pool chemicals. We use earth-friendly, enzyme and plant-based biodegradable products, and encourage our guest to do their part to help maintain a healthy ecosystem.

Organic Food & Farming

We grow our own organic food right on the grounds not only to provide our guests the fresh, delicious seasonal foods, but also to highlight how a local food movement can reduce environmental impact while improving lives and health. Employing a mix of traditional Nicaraguan agriculture, cutting-edge California permaculture and regenerative agriculture techniques, we build healthy soil and robust ecosystems. We honor the legacy of native foods while introducing new plants and flavors to enhance local diet and nutrition.
