How to Get to Nicaragua.. Now!

Is everything open? Si! Is it crowded? No!

Getting to Nicaragua may be a little more difficult than going to the supermarket, but it is infinitely more exciting. Here everything is open and there is plenty of room to move, breathe and enjoy Nicaragua’s gastronomy, whether at TreeCasa or at one of the many beaches in the area.

It’s really not hard to get here, but there are a couple of decisions to make. First, there are 2 airports to choose from 1) Managua, Nicaragua or 2) Liberia, Costa Rica. Either way getting to TreeCasa from the airport are equal rides in length and scenery (volcanoes, lakes and windmills) so the choice of airport is a matter of flight costs, convenience and your overall travel plans.

Managua Route

MGA is a small airport on the outskirts of Managua, very easy to get in and out of on your way south to TreeCasa. In non-COVID times this is the preferred route if you are just visiting Nicaragua and also wanted to see the town of Granada or venture into the coffee and chocolate country in the north.

At this time flying into Managua, Nicaragua (MGA) is currently a bit more expensive for the best flight times as only Avianca Airlines is running commercial flights. This is because the airlines flying into Nicaragua are required to submit the results of your Covid PCR test (NOT the “rapid test”) at least 36 hours before flying, but the test must be taken no more than 72 hours before the flight. So, you have 36 hours to get your test results back and send to the airlines, which can be a bit tight even though many US testing sites now offer results within 24 hours. TIP: Until this policy changes, it is unlikely any other airlines will fly to MGA even though they are selling seats in advance already so we do NOT recommend booking other than Avianca at this time. 

Flying out of MGA, if you need a Covid test (required currently for anyone returning from anywhere into the US) TreeCasa has a limited number of self-test kits available (these are approved for travel back into the US), or you can get a Covid test from the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health in Managua.

Liberia Route

Liberia (LIR) currently has the best selection and pricing for flights. While you do not need a Covid test for Costa Rica, you need to show proof of vaccination OR will need to purchase special health travel insurance to enter the country. The insurance cost is around $11/day with a 5 day minimum, so $55 or so buying from one of these approved options : INS Sagicor, or BlueCross  

Arriving via land at the Nicaragua/Costa Rica border, the Covid test for Nicaragua (which needs to be a PCR test) does not need to be submitted beforehand and it can be taken up to 72 hours before traveling. With that you have enough time to take the test at home before flying and get the results by the time you cross the border.
